The 5 gap patterns. Why your brand isn't being cited by ChatGPT

Every audit reduces to one of these five patterns. Each comes with a specific fix. Long-form treatment with examples from real B2B audits.

After dozens of audits across categories. B2B SaaS, ed-tech, professional services, multi-market consumer subscriptions. The same five failure patterns recur. When a brand loses a buyer-intent prompt to a competitor, the diagnosis almost always reduces to one of these five. Each comes with a specific fix.

This is the diagnostic lens we use on every Citorra audit. The value isn't in inventing new categories. It's in compressing the universe of possible "why aren't we cited" answers into five practical buckets with five practical fixes.

Pattern 01. Missing stats or data page

What it looks like:a competitor has a page like "Customer Success Manager salary by region. 2026" or "Email open rates by industry." You don't. When buyers ask LLMs for category-related questions that involve numbers, the LLM pulls the competitor's stats page and cites them.

Why LLMs do this:pages with original numbers serve as "anchor points" in the response. An LLM that's synthesizing a recommendation prefers to be able to cite a specific stat. Without a data page in the category, you're missing one of the six signals (statistics + data) that drives ~30–40% citation lift.

How we fix it:publish 1–3 stats pages per quarter. They don't need to be original research. Well-cited synthesis of existing public data works too. Format:

Real-world signal: after deploying a single stats page in a B2B SaaS category, we typically see citation rate on stats-related prompts jump from ~10% to ~40% within 3 weeks.

Pattern 02. Reddit / Quora vacuum

What it looks like:when you ask ChatGPT about your category, it cites Reddit threads. You search those threads. You're not mentioned. Your competitor is.

Why it matters:Reddit punches above its weight in LLM citations. Across most B2B categories, Reddit threads account for 15–30% of LLM-cited sources. Even when other domains have higher Google authority, LLMs treat Reddit as a high-signal source of "real user opinions." If your brand is absent from the threads, you're absent from the citation pool.

How we fix it:targeted Reddit seeding from aged accounts (3+ months old, real karma, real participation history). Not spam. Real answers to real questions, with occasional natural brand mentions where relevant. Volume isn't the goal. Coverage of the 5–10 threads LLMs are actually retrieving is the goal.

Same applies to Quora, Indie Hackers, Hacker News, and category-specific forums (r/PPC for ad tech, r/SaaS for SaaS, etc.).

Important:this work is slow and looks fake if done poorly. Real participation, real value-adds, real account history. Anyone offering "Reddit promotion services" that promise X posts/week is doing it wrong and will get accounts shadow-banned within a month.

Pattern 03. Comparison gap

What it looks like:third-party comparison articles ("Best CRM for X", "Tool A vs Tool B") dominate the buyer-research phase. If you're not in the comparison table, you're not in the consideration set.

Why LLMs love comparison content:a single comparison article gives the LLM 3–10 entities to surface in response to one query. It's information-dense and pre-structured. LLMs preferentially cite comparison content for buyer-stage queries (estimated 47% of buyer-stage citations in B2B categories).

How we fix it (two-pronged):

  1. Build your own comparison pages. Write "You vs Competitor A" and "You vs Competitor B" pages honestly. Show your differentiators, acknowledge competitor strengths. LLMs prefer balanced comparisons. Pure one-sided puff pieces get downweighted.
  2. Get added to third-party comparisons. Find the top 5–10 comparison articles in your category. Outreach to the authors with: data, screenshots, customer quotes, and a clear ask to add you. Most will, especially if you offer to be a source for their next article.

Signal multiplier:being added to a single dominant third-party comparison article can shift citation rate on comparison prompts by 15–25 percentage points overnight. It's one of the highest-leverage moves available.

Pattern 04. Empty third-party listings

What it looks like: your G2 row has 8 reviews. Your competitor has 240. Trustpilot or Capterra similar disparity. LLMs notice.

Why it matters:review platforms are heavily weighted in LLM trust signals for B2B software (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, GetApp) and consumer subscription (Trustpilot, app store ratings, marketplace reviews). When LLMs synthesize "is brand X established?" they often default to checking these platforms because that's where the freshest user data lives.

Practitioner data: brands with <12 reviews on their primary platform are cited ~4× less than brands with 50+ reviews. Regardless of star rating. Volume is the primary signal. Even mid-quality 4.0 reviews beat sparse 4.8 ratings in citation effect.

How we fix it: systematic review velocity campaign.

Goal: 30+ reviews on the primary platform within 90 days. After that the citation effect compounds. More reviews → more LLM citations → more inbound traffic → more reviews.

Pattern 05. Unparseable site

What it looks like:your content exists but the LLM can't cleanly extract your entity. Maybe schema markup is missing, maybe llms.txt isn't deployed, maybe the page structure is JavaScript-rendered in a way that makes the brand mention invisible to crawlers.

Why it matters: LLMs that crawl the web in real time (Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Gemini grounding) need to identify whothe content is about. If the entity isn't clearly marked, the LLM either (a) fails to associate the content with your brand or (b) defaults to citing a source it can parse cleanly. Sites with proper schema markup get cited ~2.3× more for entity-recognition queries.

How we fix it:

This is the easiest pattern to fix. Typically 2–4 hours of dev work. And yet it's the most commonly missed because nobody owns it after a site is live.

How we use this lens in audits

"You lose 8 prompts to competitor X. 4 are gap pattern 01 (missing stats page). Recommend publishing ‘Category X benchmarks 2026’. 3 are pattern 02 (Reddit vacuum). Recommend seeding 5 threads. 1 is pattern 05 (unparseable). Recommend schema deployment."

That's how you go from "our AI visibility is bad" to "here are the 4 specific moves that lift it." The diagnostic clarity is what makes the work shippable inside a fixed-scope 30-day sprint instead of an open-ended retainer.

The fixes overlap. That's a feature

A well-built stats page (Pattern 01 fix) often becomes the source third-party comparison articles cite (Pattern 03 win). A Reddit seed (Pattern 02 fix) often links to your stats page, compounding both. The 12-asset sprint deliverable maps directly to these five patterns. Typically 2–3 assets per pattern, prioritized by audit findings.
